Atkins’ Bristol office is recognised for its cutting edge design

Atkins’ Bristol headquarters – The Hub – has been awarded the title of Best Corporate Workspace by the British Council for Offices (BCO) in its annual awards.

The Hub – designed and engineered by the UK’s largest engineering consultancy Atkins – houses around 1,000 staff and was designed by Atkins as a showcase for carbon critical thinking. Key sustainable features of the BREEAM Excellent rated building include chilled beams, automated opening windows, energy efficient lighting, ground source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting.

The building, which was completed in 2009, was recognised as a leader in the South West England and South Wales section of the awards, for its success in providing an innovative, sustainable and contemporary working environment. The project will now be entered for the BCO’s national awards, the winners of which will be announced in October.

Andy Crabb, Atkins’ regional director, said: “We wanted The Hub to be a building that fused engineering excellence with intelligent design whilst making its energy footprint as small as possible. We were operating at the cutting edge of what was possible but the fact that we have won such a highly regarded industry award is proof that we achieved our ambition.

“This was a truly multidisciplinary approach with architects working alongside geotechnical experts, acoustics engineers and carbon consultants. With so many of our departments collaborating on this project, the Hub represents a truly coordinated vision for Atkins and the diverse expertise of its staff.”

The BCO's annual awards programme seeks to define excellence in office space by rewarding top quality design and functionality and providing a benchmark for excellence in workplaces. The programme acknowledges innovation and focuses external attention on examples of best practice.

Real People

"I moved to Bristol from London a year ago and I've never felt more settled. The city is big enough to boast diversity, culture and various tourist attractions and has an excellent new shopping centre. Initially, I thought I'd be homesick for London but I'm not a bit.  Bristol offers affordable rents, good public transport, lots of pedestrian retail areas and plenty of fashionable eateries, pubs and... people!"
