Bells Diner

Dispelling all usual impressions of a diner – stewed coffee, meatloaf and surly waitresses – Bell’s version has become something of a Bristol institution. With an informal, friendly atmosphere, and refined yet rustic decor, it has an equally sophisticated modern European menu attracting a rather elegant clientele.

Housed in a Victorian building split into two rooms, the intimate ambience is maintained with a menu changed daily (completely, every day) to take in what’s freshest and keep customers on their toes. Born of the imagination of local uber-chef Chris Wicks, the food is inspired by the likes of Ferran Adria at El Bulli and Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck. Noteworthy dishes include red onion and goats cheese tarte tatin with frisee and walnut oil, and mains like grilled hake with spicy red wine and tomato sauce. And don’t ditch the desert trolley, particularly the liquorice parfait with poached quince. It’s no surprise that Bell’s Diner was voted Best Restaurant in the South West by the Observer’s Food Monthly magazine twice. Tucked away in the heart of Montpellier, this is an unforgettable experience.

Meal for two, including wine and service: £100

Real People

“It was an easy decision to make when I was offered the opportunity to relocate from London to Bristol to restart my career as a surveyor with King Sturge. With a chance to work for one of the largest and top firms in the region, it offers the same exciting career prospects but with a much better quality of life”
