Bordeaux Quay
Combining ‘eco’ and ‘gourmet’ might sound a tough task, but the impossible appears to have been achieved in this harbourside favourite. The converted 1920s warehouse is committed to reducing its environmental impact, one element of which is using seasonal ingredients, the majority of which have been sourced from the South West– and it shows.
From wild game to fresh Cornish fish or locally reared organic lamb, your taste buds will thank you as much as your conscience. Breakfast/brunch/light bites are available in the informal brasserie (where bar snacks start at just £2 and mains at around a £10), while the upstairs restaurant offers seriously fine dining opportunities in a lively but mellow atmosphere. Throw in a bakery, cookery school, deli and wine bar, and it’s got it all. In short, this is a gleaming jewel of a restaurant that underpins its principles with flair, imagination and rigorous professionalism, and illustrates the value of buying first-class ingredients and then cooking them with precision but without fuss.
Meal for two including wine and service in the downstairs brasserie: £50; upstairs restaurant: £75.
Real People
"Having spent 10 years living and working in Central London for a busy Local Authority and then a major Housebuilder a move to somewhere a little quieter but with similar job and lifestyle opportunities seemed appealing... but did such a place exist? Personal circumstances lead me to Bristol. Having only visited Bristol on a handful of occasions I moved here and found a job with planning consultancy WYG. Having spent the last few months getting to know the City and adjusting to my new work role, Bristol seems to hold the perfect balance. The City is vibrant with lots going on in the arts and culture world. It has an interesting history with wonderful architecture and a beautiful waterside setting. There are so many places to explore and endless places to be entertained, fed and watered"
