Hotel du Vin

From the dimly lit bar (complete with squidgy sofas, abstract murals, pistachios and giant green olives on the tables), through the exquisitely crafted menu, the experience at the Bristol branch of this deservingly flourishing national micro-chain is close to faultless as you can hope for anywhere in the country.

It offers a menu rooted in classic, seasonal European cuisine with a contemporary edge, with head chef Marcus Lang adding his own selections daily, all supporting the Hotel du Vin ethos of using the finest, freshest local produce, cooked simply and priced sensibly (three-course dinner, without wine, will set you back around £40). The wine list – like the food – is the stuff that classic bon viveur dreams are made of. Try the chicken liver & foie gras parfait with pear chutney and pan-fried fillet of halibut with olive mash for an idea of where the two Michelin stars came from.

Meal for two, including wine and service: £110

Real People

"Bristol is such a great place to work! There are so many interesting and exciting things happening here, I just don’t have the time to keep up. I love the fact that Bristol has everything that a big city can offer; but, on the days when you want to get away from it all, you can easily escape to the country or down to the beach for a surf. This luxury is something that people often overlook..."
