The Albion

A popular Clifton haunt for many years, the Albion has recently been transformed into a gastro pub of the highest order. As well as diners in the lively downstairs bar, the Albion has a more relaxed dining room upstairs, and a private dining room that seats 14 people.

The interior has the trademark look – National Trust, heritage-style paint, reclaimed wooden floors, bookcases, leather armchairs, chapel chairs, gold-edged mirrors, fresh flowers – and a long farmhouse table by the open kitchen has become a self-styled “chef’s table”, with people booking in advance. Chefs Toby Gritten and Jake Platt both have an impressive list of top Bristol restaurants on their CVs and this shows in the presentation and seasonality of the menus, not to mention the use of top West Country suppliers. From ox cheek and chips, to quail, this is no-frills, fantastic food of the highest order - little wonder this former student drinking den has bagged excellent write-ups in all the national press (as well as a widely-predicted Michelin star to appear on its growing CV). Book early, and save room for pudding.

Meal for two, including wine and service: £80

Real People

Robert Fenner moved to Bristol from Grayling's London office in July 2008. "It was a really good move for me," he says.  "The energy in business here is as dynamic as anywhere else, and the quality of life is so much better.  Bristol has an identity of its own, and the South-West is a great place to be - whether as a next step or as a starting point in a public relations career. I'd recommend it to anyone."
